S. Bear Bergman

Writer, performer, activist
Included with Bear’s permission

S. Bear Bergman (www.sbearbergman.com) is an author, a storyteller, an instigator, a gender-jammer, and a good example of what happens when you overeducate a contrarian. Ze is also the author or editor of three books, most recently (with Kate Bornstein) the anthology Gender Outlaws: The Next Generation (Seal press, 2010). Bear has also created and toured four award-winning solo performances, and is a frequent contributor to anthologies on all manner of topics from the sacred to the extremely profane. A longtime activist, Bear continues to work at the points of intersection between and among gender, sexuality, and culture, and spends a lot of time trying to discourage people from installing traffic signals there.

If you’re a fan of S.Bear, check out the CBC radio documentary called “The Small Person Acquisition Project”. It has to be the most beautiful story I’ve ever heard. It can be found here: http://www.cbc.ca/thecurrent/2010/06/june-21-2010.html

Mission Statement

The mission of the Butch Lab Project is to promote a greater understanding of masculine of center gender identities, expressions, and presentations, through encouraging: 1. visibility, because we feel alone; 2. solidarity, because there are many of us out there, but we don’t always communicate with each other; and 3. an elevation of the discussion, because we have a long history and lineage to explore and we don’t have to reinvent the wheel.
